This shrimp boat floated up to a rooftop in Chalmette and provided refuge for 2 families who were stranded on a roof in rising water. They survived for 3 days until they were rescued from the drifting shrimper as the water remained 10 feet deep for nearly 3 weeks in the St. Bernard Parish. The survivors scrawled a new name on the stern of the craft, probably one of the passengers: S.S. Vanessa
